Judging others

I was at work one morning and I received a facebook message.

It was from a good friend and classmate back when I was

in business school at University of Virginia.

“As most of you may have heard, he has passed away.”

I did not know. I did not hear about this.

I was in a state of shock.

This person who passed away was in a year-long group

I was in, so I worked quite often with him.

Suddenly I remembered the first time I met him.

I thought he was the typical UVA college-boy stereotype.

White. Preppy. Ignorant. Full of himself. Probably

had a lack of disregard for others.

I made all of those judgments from just seeing him

once and hearing him talk.

As I started to actually work with him, I realized how

wrong I was.

Boy was I wrong and off.

This person was anything but those judgments I had made of him

In fact, as I got to know him, I was ashamed

that I made those judgments.

It is very easy for us to see someone and quickly judge.

No matter who you are or your background, you have

had an instance where you have judged. Most often

if not all the time, our judgments have been wrong.

As I reread the message on facebook, I realized

the valuable lesson this person who passed away

so young taught me.

Give others the benefit of getting to know them

before any judgments are passed.
