What I learned from a 2-year old

As parents we are expected to teach our children a lot of things. We normally don't view it as children teaching the parents. Yet, here I am at the playground with Zayan who is a few weeks shy of being two years old, and he is teaching me something very important.

No matter who passes by him, he yells out "Hi!!"  and waves his hand with such power. Or gives the Muslim greeting of peace Assalamualikum "Peace be upon you."

He does not discriminate either.

He will greet anyone and everyone...even people driving by in cars.

Their reactions are the best. At first they are thinking who in the world is greeting them, but then the energy of his “Hi!!” becomes contagious and they are waving back saying “Hi!!” all gleefully and full of joy.

I, on the other hand,  do not think to say hi or greet strangers often enough.

One of the best things you can do is give greetings of peace especially to people you don't know and pass by.  As I consider myself a Muslim, it is one of the tenants to greet strangers and non-strangers alike with a greeting of peace.. We often pass each other by either looking at our phones or toward the ground and never think to give a simple “Hi” or a smile.

Today at the playground my child proved that children can teach parents, and with that teaching I leave this with a...

“Hi!!”
